THE TIME HAS COME! A MARY G DREAM “A PUBLIC HOLIDAY FOR INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIA AND MAIN STREAM AUSTRALIA” Dear Countrymen and extended families Hello Darling its me Mary G(edarrdyu) and I seek your support in pushing for a public holiday in recognition of all our Indigenous people here in Australia. The suffering, trials and tribulations that we have gone through and are still going through must be acknowledged in Australia. The public holiday is a tool to assist in the recognition of our people and also an opportunity for a reconciliation journey to recommence. We have public holidays for other historical and celebrity reasons. Well now is the time for a true day of appreciation by the other cultures and races of the fact that this was and always will be Aboriginal country. National Reconciliation Week 27 May - 3 June National Reconciliation Week began in 1996 to bring to the great Australian public a special focus for nationwide activities. The week was initiated to reflect on successes of Reconciliation and future endeavours that need to be accomplished to achieve reconciliation between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians. The week enables the nation to celebrate two other significant achievements in Australia’s history that have brought a nation closer to significant improvements in Indigenous rights. May 27 is the anniversary date for the 1967 Referendum. An overwhelming 90% of Australian people voted to have the Australian constitution changed to remove clauses of discrimination against Indigenous Australians The referendum gave the Commonwealth Government the power to make laws on behalf of Aboriginal People that could over-rule State decisions on Aboriginal affairs. This was a stepping stone to major changes for our people. Lets now work towards a major addition to this history by stimulating our country to acknowledge, celebrate and take part in the recognition of the oldest living culture on this planet by not only continuing to have reconciliation week but also to have a dedicated Public holiday established. Surely our people's struggles, sacrifices and determination must not be in vain. Please pass this message around to all our people and our supporters here so we can together guide our governments to carry out this humane and responsible action. Mary G Whaddayow
